Solana Launches Largest Upgrade Alpenglow Since 2020
Solana is receiving its largest upgrade since its launch in 2020, called Alpenglow. This update ensures that transactions are finalized in about 0.15 seconds, compared to the current wait time of around 6 seconds. The upgrade changes the technology under the hood, while wallets and apps continue to function the same. Solana's computers now vote directly on transactions, speeding up the confirmation process. The upgrade occurs at blockchain point 459,653,000, expected around 14:00 UTC, or 16:00 Dutch time. The tests were not without issues; the test network had to be restarted six times. Alpenglow is the biggest change for Solana since its launch and replaces the way the network reaches consensus on transactions. Administrators need to update their software about 18 minutes before the switch. The rollout of Alpenglow is happening in phases, with the new voting system going live today.
