OpenAI Launches In-House Git Backend Pando, Takes Over Main Code Repository
OpenAI's in-house Git backend Pando has launched and taken over the company's main code repository. Over the past year, Codex has enabled engineers to deploy a large number of agents to write code simultaneously, leading to an increase in code branches, pushes, merges, and pull requests. The original system frequently experienced slowdowns and merge failures, with reliability dropping below 90%. The core architecture of Pando was designed by one engineer, with multiple Codex agent teams participating in its implementation, taking 10 weeks to go into production. This backend supports parallel processing of code pushes across different branches, avoiding queuing. When pulling code, it reuses existing Git data packets and directly distributes them through caching, resulting in a nearly 80% reduction in median latency for code pushes. It distributes nearly 1 PB of data daily, with a cache hit rate exceeding 99%. However, different branches no longer guarantee the same state at any given moment. OpenAI retains the Git client and protocol, only rebuilding the backend, so the development process for engineers and agents remains largely unchanged.
