Low East Coast diesel stocks may delay inflation relief for Bitcoin investors
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that East Coast diesel and heating-oil inventories will remain unusually low this winter, potentially keeping transport and household costs high. As of October 6, September distillate stocks were 32% below the 2021-2025 seasonal average, with a forecasted gap of 20-30% through winter. Limited local refining capacity forces the region to rely on Gulf Coast shipments and foreign fuel, with imports typically covering about 15% of East Coast consumption from December to February. Low global stocks may complicate replenishment efforts.
Although Brent crude prices eased late in September, the monthly average increased, and EIA forecasts suggest U.S. retail diesel prices will remain above 4 dollars per gallon through next year due to low inventories sustaining the wholesale fuel premium over crude. Persistent fuel costs can directly impact households and increase the cost of goods transportation.
The Federal Reserve's October 13 release indicates earlier cost pressures, with oil and fuel noted as significant input-cost pressures. If fuel costs hinder broader inflation relief, they could delay improved financing conditions for Bitcoin investors. An August 2023 IMF working paper found that Fed tightening reduced a historical price measure for several crypto assets due to decreased investor risk appetite.
National retail diesel prices fell to 6.199 dollars per gallon on October 5 from 6.529 dollars on September 21, despite EIA's low winter inventory forecast. East Coast imports averaged 84,000 barrels per day in the week ending October 2, higher than 56,000 from the same week last year but lower than 103,000 the previous week. Regional stocks decreased to 21.7 million barrels from 21.9 million the week prior, indicating a mixed supply situation.
