Bitcoin Miners Face Increased Management Burden After Transition to AI
Companies that have transitioned from Bitcoin mining to AI data center operations are facing a new crisis. Despite entering the AI infrastructure market, the management burden is growing due to a sharp decline in AI-related stocks and rising financing costs. Some companies are selling off large amounts of their Bitcoin holdings to raise funds for data center investments. According to the Wall Street Journal, the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining and Digital Power ETF, which invests in Bitcoin mining and AI data center companies, has fallen 23% this year. The CEO of Kiln Infrastructure stated that while they have moved away from Bitcoin, they have discovered a market that is even more volatile than Bitcoin. The reason Bitcoin mining companies are venturing into AI is due to intensified mining competition and declining profitability caused by halving events. Mining companies are considered to have an advantage in the AI data center business due to their large-scale power supply networks and cooling facilities. However, as doubts about the profitability of AI investments spread, stock prices are under pressure. According to analysts at Needham, publicly listed mining companies sold 48,900 Bitcoins in the first half of this year alone. As financing for data center construction becomes more difficult, Bitcoin sales are expected to increase. CleanSpark has chosen a strategy of balancing both mining and AI operations, currently holding over $1 billion in Bitcoin.
