Arthur Hayes Discusses Flop Network's Computing Power Pricing and Derivatives Scheme
Arthur Hayes published an article explaining the concept of Flop Network, stating that FLOP is "the food for AI agents" and can be directly exchanged for computing power (FLOPS). He believes that if Flop becomes a payment network for AI agents, the FLOP/computing power exchange rate will become the global benchmark for spot computing power. Currently, there is no unified global price for computing power, and both chip and AI token prices are derivatives of computing power, so the focus should be on pricing the computing power itself. Hayes proposed that Flop Network produces blocks every second, with receipts in the blocks recording the latency of inference tasks, the volume of floating-point operations, and transaction fees, which will be used to calculate the FLOP/computing power exchange rate. The network supports reserving computing power for delivery up to 30 days in the future, standardized as tradable Flop Computing Units (FCU), similar to deliverable forwards. Based on this, he designed cash-settled FRCR quarterly futures and perpetual contracts, with USD as margin, allowing market makers to synthesize long and short positions by buying or supplying FCUs and rolling over. Hayes stated that this will make the spot and forward computing power prices of Flop Network the global benchmark, providing a blueprint for the computing power derivatives market in the era of AI agents.
